Update (June 16, 2016): As of 12 p.m., around 9,000 IPL customers are still without power.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Wicked winds and heavy rain tore through the metro area Wednesday night making the evening commute tricky and in some places downright hazardous.

The storms packed a punch.

At 10 p.m, IPL still reported an estimated 21,000 customers without power. The utility said the areas inside Interstate 465 on the north side were the hardest hit, with damage to lines and poles because of downed trees.

IPL expected repair work to continue through the night, with eight crews working overnight. The utility predicted repairs would last until Thursday.

Trees came down across the city, from the northwest side on Guion Road near 38th Street to Broad Ripple.

Drivers plowed through high water at Kessler and Rex Drive, and at Crawfordsville Road and High School Road in Speedway, street drains simply couldn’t keep up.

Feet of water filled neighborhood streets in Speedway at 30th and Hollister.

On her way home from work, Kimberly Allen drove right in and stalled her truck.

“I was on the phone with my husband, and I was telling him it was coming up deep,” she said, “But then, it got deeper and deeper, and I was like, oh I can’t get out, and I was stuck.”

She said she learned a lesson as neighbors ran to help.

“Not go through any water at all,” she said.

Speedway resident Lisa Lynn said she’s glad the torrential rain stopped when it did.

“It could have been so much worse. It can always be worse,” said Lynn.

Her sump pump couldn’t fight against the rain, and her basement took on water, meaning hours of cleanup work later in the evening Wednesday.

“I’m hopeful, but because of the direction of the draining, most of it’s going to be manual labor, me doing it myself,” she said.
