INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 9, 2016) – It’s official: the Indianapolis Colts have released Andre Johnson.
A transaction that had been anticipated for the past few weeks became a reality Wednesday.
Johnson was one of the Colts’ major free-agent acquisitions last offseason, signing a three-year, $21 million contract that included $10 million in guarantees. By releasing him, the team frees up $5 million under the salary cap.
The Colts hoped Johnson remained a top-level player when they signed the former Houston Texans standout, but that never materialized. He finished last season with 41 receptions, 503 yards and four touchdowns.
Johnson has expressed a desire to continue his career, and add to his impressive totals. He ranks No. 8 in NFL history with 1,053 receptions and No. 9 with 14,100 yards.
