Officers were called to the 600 block of Terrace Drive, east of Zionsville Community High School and west of the Zionsville Golf Course, just before 1 p.m.
Police said John Clements, 82, was shot while standing outside. He was awake and breathing when police arrived. He was rushed to St. Vincent Hospital in Marion County.
Clements later died, police said. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
All Zionsville Community Schools were placed on lockdown as police searched for a suspect, who is described by the Boone County Sheriff’s office as a black male driving a newer white Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows.
Around 2:30 p.m., police said schools were lifting the lockdown and letting children leave.
Based on evidence from the crime scene, police said a high-caliber rifle was used. Several police agencies are involved in the search.
