CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ind. – When a woman called police to report some heirloom jewelry and other items had been stolen, she was distraught and probably didn’t think she’d ever see the stolen items again.

But Indiana Conservation officers were able to find the jewelry and arrest the man suspected of stealing it.

Officer Dennis Talley said he was off-duty when he received a call from the woman, who’d just returned to her Leavenworth home to discover someone had broken into her safe and taken heirloom jewelry, some recently purchased jewelry, food and fireworks.

Talley’s investigation led him to James Raines, 27, who admitted to the burglary. He said he’d already sold the jewelry. Talley figured out where the jewelry had been sold and returned it to its rightful owner.

A search of Raines’ home also turned up crystal amphetamine and fireworks, police said.

Raines was booked into the Crawford County Jail Thursday on several charges, including burglary, theft and possession of methamphetamine.
