MUNCIE, Ind. — Authorities are investigating a the death of a woman after a house fire in Muncie.
It happened Wednesday night around 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of N. Granville Ave. Firefighters discovered the body of a female victim. Details about her age, the circumstances of her death or the cause of the fire are not known.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to assist with the investigation. This is standing operating procedure when there is a fire death, according to Muncie Fire Department Chief Investigator Robert Mead.
A neighbor told CBS4 that he saw the fire and called 911. Firefighters arrived within two minutes, but they were too late to save the woman, whose body was discovered in the living room of the home. That neighbor said he tried to get inside the home before crews arrived.
“With my pajamas on, I run across the cold. I didn’t feel the cold because my adrenaline was in me and I went over there and knocked on the back door and then the back door opened up and I started to go in and the smoke blew out of it,” said neighbor Jack Holland.
Holland said smoke from the fire was extremely thick. He believes the woman had been renting the home for about a year and described the victim as the mother of two small children.
