(April 7, 2015) – A photo of a dog holding a heartbreaking sign went viral last week, and because of it that dog now has a home.
Chester, a six-year-old pit bull mix, has been waiting to be adopted from a New York animal shelter for five years.
The shelter made a special Facebook page for Chester on April 2nd to help him get adopted. They took a picture of Chester with a handwritten cardboard plea and posted it to Facebook.
The sign said, “Why doesn’t anybody want me? I’ve been waiting five years. Everyone at the shelter tells me what a good boy I am. So why has no one adopted me? I promise to be good and love my new family. Please maybe you are my new family… I sit and wait for you to come. Love, Chester”
Almost immediately, Chester’s picture went viral. According to Gillian Wood Pultz, the executive director of the North Fork Animal Welfare League, Chester’s picture was shared over 2,000 times and she received hundreds of inquiries.
On April 3rd Chester’s Facebook page posted that he was being adopted into the Dor family. Chester’s new “dad” Adi Dor wrote, “A great big THANK YOU to the Southold Animal Shelter for taking such good care of Chester for all those years, he is an amazing and loving dog and we can’t wait for him to come home. Love you Chester!!”
Chester’s Facebook page is now being used to help other shelter dogs find homes.
