FISHERS, Ind- Firefighters in Fishers were surprised to find a Mercedes SUV inside a home when they got called to a house fire just before noon on Monday.

“We had a vehicle that ran through the front wall of the house and the tires were still spinning which created a bunch of smoke from the rubber getting hot on the tire” said Capt. John Mehling with the Fishers Fire Department. “So that created a situation that looked a lot like a house fire.”

The car went straight through the home while two people were inside. Firefighters believe the driver had a medical emergency.

“Unfortunately it’s not as uncommon as you think it would be, it does happen on somewhat of a regular basis,” Mehling said of cars hitting homes. “This one was a little more extreme than others.”

“There was a gaping hole in their house and it looked like an explosion, but no debris was on the outside so i figured something had gone in,” said a neighbor who went outside to see what happened when she heard the sirens.

She says she spoke to one of the homeowners who was hit by the car.

“She was standing there (in the kitchen) and said all she saw was headlights.”

That woman was taken in an ambulance, and according to a family member had emergency surgery. Firefighters say they’re thankful it wasn’t worse.

“Two people in the home, a large SUV coming through the front wall… the potential is very high that this could’ve been much worse,” Mehling said.

As contractors work to board up the missing wall, neighbors are left confused, wondering how this could’ve happened.

“Can’t figure out how he got in the house, which direction he was coming from, there’s no easy explanation for it,” the neighbor said. “The way it’s angled makes it even more bizarre to have a car in the house.”

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
