INDIANAPOLIS — One man is wounded following a shootout with Indiana State Police on Indy’s south side.
State Police say the search for a wanted suspect ended with the man crashed into a pond at an apartment complex near Southport Road.
The suspect then jumped out of the partially submerged car and tried to run away from troopers leading to shots being fired.
“The suspect was armed. As he was fleeing, one of the troopers exchanged gunfire with the suspect,” said ISP Sgt. John Perrine.

Sgt. Perrine claims the suspect fired at least one round at troopers, although it’s not clear who fired the first shot. The incident began around 10 a, Monday morning with a search for the wanted suspect.
“Troopers were following up on investigation into a suspect with several felony warrants, including gun charges and drug charges,” said Perrine.
While the shooting happened at the Sundance Apartments, troopers claim the violent encounter began at a nearby hotel.
“Their investigation led them to a hotel in this area. They encountered the suspect in public area of the hotel. The suspect fled on foot and got into a vehicle,” said Perrine.
From there, the suspect drove just a few hundred yards over an embankment and into the pond.
Following the shooting, the wounded suspect was taken into custody. Police reported the car the suspect crashed into the pond was reported stolen from Terre Haute on Feb. 24.
While no troopers were hurt, State Police say the case is another reminder about the dangers officers face every day on the job.
“These encounters and these investigations, everything we do there’s nothing routine about it. We’re very fortunate the officers not hurt in this situation and now we’ve got an investigation to do,” said Perrine.
The suspect was stabilized at the hospital. He is facing a long list of possible charges.
ISP later identified the suspect involved in the shooting and pursuit as Christopher Crouch, 36, of Nineveh. He was wanted on several felony warrants for charges related to auto theft, drug possession and intimidation with a weapon.
