INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (November 11, 2015) – A celebration honoring Hoosier heroes drew crowds of thousands downtown Wednesday morning.

The 38th Infantry Division Band kicked off the Veterans Day Ceremony held at the Indy War Memorial. Guest speakers included veterans and Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.

Ballard praised the city for being one of the few in the nation to provide emergency resources to veterans, especially homeless veterans.

“One phone call and a homeless veteran can have a roof over their head and food in their belly and all the services at their disposal,” Ballard said.

Families lined the streets of downtown after the ceremony for a parade featuring more than 80 organizations.

Army Veteran James Fletcher served two tours in Vietnam. He said he has so much pride for not only his service, but those in Indy who respect and honor the military.

“Words really can’t explain. I’m touched,” Fletcher said.
