INDIANAPOLIS — Rescue crews worked to free a 17-year-old trapped inside a downtown elevator shaft Saturday night.

Around 9:35 p.m. emergency crews were called to the Columbia Club at 121 Monument Circle on a report of a person trapped.

The victim told firefighters he was with a guest who was staying at the Columbia Club and decided to go off for a little exploring of the 1889 era building.

The teen said he got onto the elevator and then climbed through the top of the elevator and into the elevator shaft.

At one point he became stuck after being trapped between the elevator and the shaft wall.

Two workers in the freight elevator reported hearing the teen’s cries for help and called the fire department.

Rescue crews worked some 30 minutes using special rescue tools to free the young man.

He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in good condition. He was treated for multiple cuts, scrapes and bruises.
