INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (December 1, 2015) – A student at Westlane Middle School has been suspended after bringing a gun to school on Monday, according to MSD of Washington Township.
The student’s classmate reported it to authorities, and the weapon was confiscated.
The student who brought the gun faces a one-year expulsion.
MSD of Washington Township sent the following letter to families of students at the school.
Good evening. This is Linda Lawrence, the very proud principal of Westlane Middle School. While we are excited to have students back at school after the holiday break, I am disappointed to be calling to inform you of an event that occurred at school today. This afternoon, we received a report that one of our students brought a handgun to school. As soon as we received the report, the administration responded by confiscating the weapon and immediately began disciplinary action with law enforcement.
As a result, we are grateful that some of our outstanding students made us aware of the incident. Providing a safe and secure learning environment is always a top priority, so we take these incidents very seriously. The student was suspended from school and will be recommended for expulsion for one calendar year per Indiana statute.
As parents, you can also help. Please take this opportunity to speak to your child about the importance of school safety. While peer pressure is great at this age, we want to encourage students to feel comfortable reporting any information they may have that compromises their safety or the safety and well-being of others. Working together we can maintain an environment where students are free to focus on learning.
As always, I welcome your comments and questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you should have any concerns.
