SPEEDWAY, Ind. (May 22, 2015) - When the track closed at 6 p.m. on Friday, Rockin’ on Main Street in Speedway was just getting started.

Police shut down two blocks of Main Street there, where hundreds of people poured in to listen to bands play and enjoy food offered by local vendors.

The event was hosted by the Speedway Chamber of Commerce. The thinking behind it was since the track closed at 6 p.m., everyone would head to Main Street Speedway, where event organizers attempted to attract families by having events for kids as well.

2015 marks the ninth year Speedway has hosted Rockin’ on Main Street to showcase the town’s transition. A few years ago, much of Main Street Speedway was vacant. There has been a total revitalization though with the Rockin’ Main event aiming to celebrating that.

“Obviously Speedway residents and the community love the racing community, we love the 500, we love Carb Day, but we want people to think of Speedway as a destination other than race time. We started this party nine years ago called Rockin’ on Main so people would think about staying in Speedway instead of either going home, going to Broad Ripple, going downtown, we want them to just leave their cars parked and come here and have fun,” said Connie Harris, Executive Director of the Speedway Chamber of Commerce.
