INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A single-vehicle crash on the east side claimed the life of a Peru man Monday afternoon.

First responders were called to the rollover crash on the ramp from southbound I-465 to eastbound I-70 at approximately 3:42 p.m.

When crews arrived, they found they found a 1999 GMC pick-up truck on its top with two occupants inside. The Indianapolis Fire Department was able to extricate them quickly, but 77-year-old Elijah Hawkins died from his injuries on the scene.

The passenger in the vehicle, 62-year-old Susan Hawkins, was transported to Eskenazi Hospital with serious injuries. There were also two dogs inside the vehicle that appeared uninjured. They were taken by animal control units.

Investigators believe Elijah was driving too fast to safely navigate the curve of the ramp. He reportedly ran off the road, overcorrected across two lanes and went off the other side and overturned.

Both occupants were wearing seat belts and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.
