INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- A man was shot and killed Monday morning on the east side of Indianapolis, police say.
Officers were called to Rowney Terrace Apartments in the 1300 block of Riley Place, near Emerson Avenue and Terrace Avenue, just before 10:30 a.m.
The male victim had been shot multiple times, according to police. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
A woman was taken in for questioning, but no arrests have been announced.
So far the reason for the killing remains unclear.
"It’s really early in the investigation. We believe that everything is contained, but that information hasn’t been revealed just yet," said IMPD officer Aaron Hamer.
Officers couldn’t explain the connection between the man and woman, including if or how the pair knew each other, but it does not appear anyone else was involved in the incident.
"This does not seem to be random. It was between two individuals and it is isolated at this time," said Hamer. "It’s hard to determine what actually took place yet, so they’re gathering evidence and make a determination on what took place this morning."
The violence continues what has been a deadly start to the new year. The death marks the fourth homicide just three days into February and the 20th killing since the start of the new year.
"This is obviously very disappointing for us. This is homicide number 20 for us. It’s concerning and very disappointing," said Hamer.
Police admit the reason for each homicide varies, but add that the inability to solve conflicts without weapons is one of the main culprits.
"There’s a lot of ways we can handle disagreements here in the city and a lot of people determined to use violence and it’s very disheartening," said Hamer.
Police are not searching for any additional suspects in the shooting, but anyone with information about the shooting can submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers by calling 317-262-TIPS (8477).
