SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. – The Shelby County Animal Shelter is looking for answers after a good Samaritan found an injured dog wandering in the country.

Staff members at the shelter say they have never had a dog with such severe burns come through their doors.  The veterinarian caring for the animal says it is tough to definitively determine what caused the wounds but signs point to them being chemical burns.

“The chemical smell of the dog is something you notice,” said Chris Browder, who works at the shelter. “And, you just wonder how long had he been on his own?”

They have name the dog Justice and they hope to be able to achieve just that for him.

“Keep prayers going for Justice that we can get him healed and we can find the person who knows something,” Browder said.

Justice is having a difficult time eating and is also battling an infection.

“Hes’ trying to eat but with the chemical burns in his mouth, from probably licking the chemicals off of him, it’s hard,” Browder said, “He has not given up and they’re not giving up and we’re certainly not giving up.”

The dog was found Friday evening in the area of 900 North and 400 West in Shelby County by a woman who just happened to be driving down the road.

“I started crying,” said Alisha Huffman, the woman who found Justice. “It was terrible. The skin is all gone.”

Browder said there has been an outpouring of support from the community. But, they are still waiting for someone to come forward with information about what the animal endured.
