If your home isn't as updated as you would like, should you remodel or move? Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty trusted advisor Nancy Mutchmore shares factors you should consider before making that decision.
If you’re thinking about remodeling or updating your home, Mutchmore recommends narrowing down what area of your home you’d like to work on and making sure you are financially ready.
Mutchmore recommends looking at your budget. “You want to make sure you look at the cost you are putting in and receive a good return on your value of what you have spent. The most common remodeling projects are a refresh on kitchens and bathrooms. A kitchen sells a house and people love all the amenities that come with an updated kitchen whether it is a countertop or back splashes or even newer appliances,” Mutchmore said.
If you decide to sell versus remodel, Mutchmore recommends going through your home and thinking about it like it is no longer yours. Check to see if you need new flooring, paint, or new countertops in your kitchen. These are simple ways to freshen your home up.
Presenting your home in the best light is something else to consider before putting your home on the market. “New construction is still carrying on a gray theme, so I tell people to think along those lines. This allows you to compete with the new construction, so when people come into your home, it looks updated with those fresh colors,” Mutchmore said.
