INDIANAPOLIS, Ind (April 8, 2016) –Jim “the broom guy” Richter is no longer banned from selling his brooms at the Nora post office.
Richter, who is blind and learned to make brooms at the Indianapolis School for the Blind, has been selling his brooms on the north side for 60 years.
In February, Richter was banned from selling them at the Nora post office. A woman claiming to be the post master approached him, telling him the post office had received numerous complaints about him selling there.
Since then, people in the community that have grown up with “the broom guy” have rallied behind him. Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives Brian Bosma is one of them. He worked with U.S. Postal Service officials to allow “the broom guy” to return.
“Jim has had a long-standing presence in Indianapolis and his personal story and positive attitude are inspiring. It’s easy to understand why he had the community rallying behind him,” said Bosma.
