UPDATE:
Indiana State Police located a red truck and driver seen just after the fatal crash. They have ruled that particular truck out as the hit-and-run vehicle in the case.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Police are searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash on I-465 on the south side.
According to the Indiana State Police, the incident occurred about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday on eastbound I-465 approaching I-65 and Keystone Avenue.
Police report that the victim, identified as 53-year-old Jeffrey A. Smith of Rushville, had been towing machinery with his truck when it experienced a mechanical problem. He had pulled seven feet off the roadway to the emergency berm and had activated his emergency flashers.

With a mechanic under the vehicle working on the problem, Smith was standing on the emergency berm when a maroon or red Ford F-150 traveling eastbound veered onto the berm and hit him. Smith was killed instantly, according to Indiana State Police. The truck didn’t stop and continued going eastbound on I-465.
Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the pickup truck, which is believed to have extensive damage to the front right side.
