ORIGINAL STORY:

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis man was shot and killed at an apartment complex on the city’s northeast side Sunday night.

The shooting took place in the 12000 block of Aristocrat Drive North.

Police arrived around 8:30 p.m. and found a man laying on the ground at the Carriage House East apartments.

Around 9 a.m. on Monday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced an arrest was made in the investigation. Police arrested Andre Johnson, 29, with the help of the IMPD Special Weapons and Tactics team. Police said Johnson was found in the 900 block of Drexel Avenue and arrested for murder. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Police believe the victim was ambushed and shot outside his own home. Officers made it clear immediately that the shooting wasn’t random.

“Currently, there is no immediate threat to the neighborhood,” said IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer.

In fact, the family of the victim, Marlin Kiser, claimed the father of three was killed by one of his childhood friends following a dispute over a girl.

“When people have these kinds of issues with one another, get someone else involved, maybe a mitigator or someone to help resolve the issue because killing someone does not solve the problem,” said Reverend James Jackson, whose church is just over a mile away from the Carriage House.

Court records claim Andre Johnson waited for two hours to ambush the victim.

Security cameras captured the suspect’s license plate as he drove away, and police tracked Johnson down because he was wearing a GPS monitor following a previous criminal case.

“We keep seeing this happen, and it’s preventable,” said Jackson.

The Carriage House East apartments were the scene of a quadruple murder in 2020. Jalen Roberts, Kimari Hunt, Braxton Ford and Marcel Wills were killed nearly two years ago. Four teens were arrested in connection to their murders. A fifth victim was also murdered at the complex in February of 2020.

“Where there are conflicts out there, we try to intervene,” said Reverend Harrison.

Reverend Harrison with the Ten Point Coalition said his group began patrolling part of the Carriage House East apartments in February of 2020, but because the complex is divided by 42nd street, Ten Point doesn’t patrol the north side of the complex where Kiser was killed.

Harrison hopes to work with police and the city to find solutions to the issues at the complex which, include a separate murder in July of 2021.

“There’s a lot of hot spots areas in that area, and it’s going to take a lot of groups working together to address all the concerns out there,” said Harrison.

Johnson remains behind bars in the Marion County Jail, where he’s being held without bond pending the formal charges.
