UPDATE: The Marion County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman as Mary Nicholson, 74, and determined that she died of natural causes.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –Police say a deadly shooting investigation on Indy’s east side is now a death investigation.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the BP gas station at East 30th Street and Mitthoeffer Road around 6:20 a.m.

They found a woman in her 70s suffering from some kind of trauma, but they say it may not be from a shooting.

Medics declared the woman dead at the scene.

Investigators later discovered the woman actually suffered the trauma across the street at the Citgo gas station, and then she drove to the BP, which is where police found her.

A spokesperson for IMPD says the coroner will determine the woman’s cause and manner of death.

Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department are speaking with witnesses.

Both the BP and Citgo gas stations are blocked off while detectives investigate.

We will update this story when more information is available.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story said the woman was shot to death, which is what police initially told us. However, now police say it’s unclear if she was shot, and they’re calling it a death investigation.
