Suspect arrested in connection with deadly shooting

UPDATE: Early Saturday morning, police served a warrant on a home in the 1400 block of Orange Street in connection with Friday’s fatal shooting of a teenager in the 1900 block of Adams Street.

Police found 22-year-old Robert Woods and detained him for questioning. Woods was then placed under arrest and preliminarily charged with murder after being questioned.

Woods is currently being held at the Marion County jail.

INDIANAPOLIS (April 17, 2015) - An Indianapolis teenager died after being shot multiple times Friday on the east side.

Officers responded to a home in the 1900 block of Adams Street around 11:30 a.m. Police said someone kicked in a door at the home and opened fire. Family members identified the deceased as 17-year-old Kevin Cheeks. He was formerly student at John Marshall Community High School.

"Its hard out here. Its rough. These people is taking away my family, my child that never harmed nobody, never hurt nobody. Its ridiculous. I just want justice," said the victim's mother, Renodia Cheeks.

Police don't believe the shooting was random.

"So right now we believe that this may be narcotics involved in that. we can say with certainty this is not a random act. we want the community to understand that with clarity," said IMPD Officer, Christopher Wilburn.

According to police, witnesses saw a 1999/2000 burgundy and gray Buick in the area at the time of the shooting. The car had a red hood, front end damage and white plastic on the driver's side door.

Neighbors said they've noticed the vehicle in the area before.
