BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. – One person died after a crash early Wednesday morning in Bartholomew County.
According to investigators, a semi truck and Ford Ranger pickup were involved in the crash, which happened on State Road 7 and County Road 250 East near Columbus around 5:10 a.m. Wednesday.
Police found Michael Parris, 33, Elizabethtown, sitting in the driver’s seat of the pickup truck. He was unresponsive and didn’t have a pulse when first responders arrived. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene. His passenger, Dystiny Leonard, 26, Columbus, went to Columbus Regional Hospital after complaining of pain. Police said the injuries weren’t life-threatening.
The semi driver, Timothy Regan, 48, Rensselaer, said he was going eastbound when the pickup crossed the center line. He couldn’t move his truck out of the way in time, Regan told police, leading to a head-on collision. Regan wasn’t hurt.
When police talked to Leonard, she told them Parris took his eyes off the road momentarily and crossed the median. By the time he saw the truck, it was too late to get out of the way, she said.
The road was closed for several hours and reopened just before 11 a.m.
