HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (April 8, 2016) – Sheriff’s deputies say a man was trapped inside his utility van after he crashed into a semi in Hamilton County Thursday. The man later died from his injuries.

The crash happened at the intersection of U.S. 31 and 236th Street around 2:05 p.m. Thursday.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the van crashed into the semi while it was stopped at a red light.

The driver, identified as Rogelio Diaz, 43, Indianapolis, was trapped in the van until he was extricated by fire personnel and taken by medical helicopter to Eskenazi Hospital. Witnesses said the van was on fire at one point, and bystanders attempted to put it out with fire extinguishers until emergency responders could arrive. Diaz suffered severe burns to his legs and other injuries, investigators said.

The semi driver, Bryon Hobbs, 57 was not injured in the crash.

The crash closed U.S. 31 during the afternoon before it reopened to traffic.
