Update (April 13, 2016) — Muncie police say all four suspects wanted in connection for the murder of Rafael Rodriguez are in custody.

MUNCIE, Ind. (April 10, 2016) – Murder is rare in Muncie. Police Chief Steve Stewart says it happens only once or twice a year. It happened for the first time in 2016 early Sunday morning on the city’s westside.

Rafael Rodriguez, 24, was killed and two other men were wounded inside a unit at the Canterbury Apartment.

“The actual shooting had occurred at 5202 Canterbury and the three victims had ran out of that residence to 5210 Canterbury,” said Chief Stewart. “We’re currently interviewing witnesses and receiving information about this incident on Canterbury.”

Stewart said a 28-year-old man was treated by paramedics and released while a 21-year-old is listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit of IU Ball Memorial Hospital.

Rodriquez was arrested last November on methamphetaime, criminal recklessness and gun charges.

“We have persons of interest, yes, we do,” said Chief Stewart. “I wouldn’t say that it was random.”

The shooting has left neighbors uneasy.

“I really have no idea about what he does for a living or anything like that. He’s a pretty good guy for everything I know. My baby’s momma said he’s a pretty good guy. She’s talked to him a couple times and he’s always been respectful and a good person and this is a big shock to her and all of us that this happened,” said Dakota Moses. “I really think it’s terrible. My baby’s mom, she really don’t feel safe anymore here. She didn’t know about any of this going down and we’re probably trying to think of different places to live.”

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call Crimestoppers of Delaware County at 765-286 4050.
