INDIANAPOLIS – Police are investigating after a shooting left one man dead on Indy’s near north east side early Saturday morning.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to the AYR Apartments on North Rural Street, just before 1:00 a.m. on reports of a person shot.
Officers on scene reported finding the man near the pool area in between two apartment buildings suffering from several apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and later was pronounced dead. On Monday, officials identified him as 32-year-old Lamar Washington.
IMPD Nightwatch Commander Kerry Buckner said witnesses heard gunshots near the pool area, but they’re not sure if the shooting took place in an adjacent parking lot or in the pool area itself.
“Yeah, the people outside were just hanging out eating and just having a conversation and they heard gunfire and they heard bullets hitting the fence by the pool,” Buckner said. “So, I’m not sure what happened, there is a parking lot on the other side of the pool though, so it may have occurred from there. So, we have it all blocked off for now until we determine the main crime scene is.
One witness, a CBS4 employee who will not be identified, lives at the apartment complex and saw the shooting unfold.
“I saw an assault style rifle pointed out the window of a darkly colored SUV, I saw the first few shots and I just looked at my buddy and he was already running so I took off behind him,” the witness said. “We were both kind of in shock as we were walking around the neighborhood talking it through with each other while we waited for the scene to calm down… it was surreal, scary, not really a whole lot of time to think, just more of a time for action.”
Other witnesses told our crew on the scene that they heard as many as twelve shots ring out. Our reporter canvassed the area and found bullet holes throughout the ground level of one of the apartment buildings and several portions of the fencing around the pool itself.
When it was safe to do so – the CBS4 employee who witnessed the shooting called Crime Stoppers and reported all he had seen to authorities.
If you have any information, you are asked to call IMPD or Crime Stoppers 317-262-TIPS.
Police say an exact cause on what led up to the shooting is not yet known and at this time, no further information has been released as the investigation is still ongoing.
