JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. – A man was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after officers say he crashed into a utility pole in Johnson County.

When officers responded to the scene in the 2200 block of State Road 144 around 5:48 a.m. Sunday, they found Eric Randall Drake, 23, standing near a flipped white 2013 Ford Fusion covered in power and cable lines.

Drake reportedly approached the officer, said he was driver and explained that he was headed home to Mooresville from a football kickoff party in Franklin when he fell asleep and hit the pole.

The officer reported noticing a strong alcoholic odor from Drake’s breath. When asked whether he had been drinking, Drake allegedly told the officer he had been.

The officer had Drake perform multiple field sobriety tests, during which he reportedly stumbled. Drake then agreed to take a breathalyzer test, which showed his blood alcohol content was .22. When asked to take a certified chemical test, he refused. He was then transported to Johnson Memorial Hospital without incident and later placed into custody and charged.
