INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A man died in a Thursday morning fire on the near south side.
The fire broke out at a home in the 300 block of Orange Street after 9 a.m. Thursday. It took crews about 20 minutes to get the fire under control.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, a 60-year-old man was killed in the fire. Two women—the man’s 84-year-old mother and 61-year-old sister—managed to escape along with the family dog. An 11-year-old who lives in the home was at school during the fire, IFD said.
IFD said there were no working smoke detectors inside. The family was renting the home and had lived there for about a year. IFD/IMPD investigators believe the fire is accidental in nature but have not determined the exact cause.
IFD said the man’s death marks the fifth fatality in the IFD Fire Service District this year.
