INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 13, 2016)-- $1.5 billion could be yours if you hit the Powerball Jackpot tonight.

“It is worth a shot,” says a Hoosier buying a Powerball ticket.

People have been picking up tickets for days, hoping they win the largest ever U.S. lottery prize.

“When it gets high, we get motivated,” says another player.

The Powerball jackpot has been growing ever since the last winner was drawn in November and with strong ticket sales this week the amount keeps on rising. This drawing has the worlds biggest potential jackpot for a single winner.

“We get the cash value, which is based on sales, from there they determine what the actual advertised jackpot amount would be. They take the cash value, determine what they could turn that into over 30 years and that is where we come up with the $1.5 billion figure,” said a Hoosier lottery official.

That billion-dollar figure has Hoosiers who have never played Powerball before coming out and buying tickets.

“I’m really not a frequent player, so I really don’t even know how it works,” said a man buying a Powerball ticket.

The odds of winning are not very high. You are actually more likely to be attacked by a shark, die from a bee sting, or become President of the United States than hit the $1.5 billion jackpot. But, that is not stopping Hoosiers from trying.

“Chances are not good, but we are going to do it and have fun,” says a Hoosier lottery player.

“Slim or none, but if you don’t play. You can not win,” said an optimistic player.

According to, the most commonly drawn numbers are 54, 14, 8, 29, and 39. The most commonly drawn Powerballs are 7 and 17.

Most people do quick pick, experts say that is a good idea because 70 percent of the past winners have won using quick pick.
