INDIANAPOLIS (August 17, 2015) – They’re one of the biggest names in business, with thousands of employees right here in Indy.
But this week, Amazon officials are defending the company after a report in the New York Times that called the company’s white-collar work environment ‘bruising’ with ‘unreasonably high standards.’
CBS4 also spoke with some local Amazon employees who said their workplace environment was less than ideal.
“They’re not fair,” said one employee. “They have their favorites.”
“If they would change the atmosphere, they would have more people who want to be there and would do a better job,” said another.
Amazon has four fulfillment centers in the state, employing about 7,000 people.
The company’s CEO Jeff Bezos responded to the New York Times article in an email to his more than 100-thousand employees, saying: “I don’t recognize this Amazon.”
He also said the company would not tolerate that kind of callous behavior.
“Amazon wouldn’t be the success it is if it were the company the New York Times wrote about,” said company spokesperson and former White House press secretary Jay Carney, in an interview with CBS News. “Over the past five years we’ve grown, and somehow we’ve managed to do that because they like it so much, because of the spirit of innovation.”
