INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police is on the scene of a five-vehicle crash that left one person dead in the northbound lanes of I-465 Thursday evening.

ISP confirmed that an adult female died in a crash involving five passenger cars on I-465 NB at mile marker 23.1 near W 79th Street and 82nd Street. ISP troopers were dispatched to the scene of the accident shortly around 6:38 p.m. after receiving reports of a multi-vehicle crash and possible entrapment.

Three adults were transported to an area hospital for treatment while the adult female was pronounced dead at the scene. ISP said another female was seriously injured and was hospitalized.

An adult male also received medical treatment after sustaining minor injuries. The crash resulted in all northbound lanes of I-465 being closed for more than four hours while the crash was investigated.

ISP said preliminary information indicates the driver of an SUV did not stop in time as it came into contact with backed-up traffic on I-465 NB near 86th Street. This led to the SUV backing into another passenger car, which was the vehicle the deceased woman and two other injured people were occupying.

This impact led to a collision involving three more vehicles as four out of the five affected vehicles were heavily damaged in the aftermath.

ISP had previously reported that a juvenile was the person who had died and that the crash involved a semi-truck. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to have played a role in the fatal crash.

The interstate remained closed as of 10:13 p.m. Thursday. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
