INDIANAPOLIS (November 5, 2015) – He was injured in Iraq – but now he’s helping other veterans right here in Indiana.

And it all started when Tom Caskey’s tour of duty was interrupted in 2003.

“I was med-evaced from Iraq and spent 30 days in Walter Reed,” said Caskey. “I was like climbing the walls looking for something to do, and the USO was there and the USO helped me out… they greeted me, I didn’t have any clothes or anything and USO gave me clothes to put on my back, shoes to put on my feet.”

The USO, or United Services Organization, has been around since World War II, doing everything from entertaining the troops to raising money for our soldiers.

And the help they gave tom, made him want to give back.

“When I first retired, I had no more association with the military (and) that took a big burden on me,” said Caskey. “Once I moved to Indiana, I got in touch with the USO and it was like night and day. It did wonders for me inside and outside.”

Tom started as a volunteer, now he’s the manager of their USO center at Camp Atterbury.

“They have been a great help to me and that’s why I give back,” said Caskey.

“He understands our mission and he understands why our mission is so important,” said Charles Ridings, the executive director of the USO of Indiana. “His relationship with the volunteers working down there is awesome. He’s doing a great job down there.”

“It’s a great feeling,” said Caskey. “That’s why we’re here. We’re here to strengthen America’s military, because of what they do for us.”

The organization is holding an event this weekend to honor their service members and volunteers. The USO of Indiana is also still in need of more volunteers.
