DEARBORN COUNTY, Ind. – Twenty-two people, including 20 students, were injured after a school bus and garbage truck collided in southeastern Indiana Wednesday morning.

Those injured in the crash were taken to various area hospitals. One student suffered severe injuries and was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, according to Superintendent Eric Lows of South Dearborn Community School Corporation.

The students on the bus were mostly middle and high school students from the district, Lows told local media. Indiana State Police said the injuries were mostly minor and involved complaints of pain.

According to Indiana State Police, the crash happened around 8 a.m. on State Road 350 at Mt. Sinai Road near Aurora. State police previously said students were on board the bus and some of them “did sustain injuries and were transported for treatment.” The crash involved a South Dearborn school bus and a Rumpke garbage truck.

The trash truck was parked on the edge of the eastbound lane while trash was being picked up. The school bus collided with the rear of the truck.

The garbage truck driver was hit by debris but was not seriously injured. The bus driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to WXIX in Cincinnati, a medical helicopter was requested at the scene but couldn’t go because of snow showers in the area.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors at this time.

Highpoint Health confirmed it was treating some of the injured students:
