GREENWOOD, Ind. — A man was shot and killed Monday at a home in Greenwood, according to the Greenwood Police Department.
Police said the shooting happened shortly before 2:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Odell Lane.
GPD said a 911 call came from inside the home, and they were notified that a resident shot an intruder. Police found a man dead inside an upstairs bedroom.
“Right now we’re in the very early stages of trying to find out who that male is, what his connection may be here at the residence, if any at all,” said GPD Chief James Ison.
Police later identified the man as 20-year-old Jerimiah Sirr Martin, of Greenwood.
Those living nearby said an incident happening in their neighborhood is frightening.
“It’s unnerving, not knowing if my family is safe,” neighbor Brian Piccione told FOX59/CBS4. “I don’t know what’s to think about it to be honest with you. I don’t know if it’s actually set in.”
Piccione said the shooting is very out of the ordinary for the area.
“It’s scary,” he said. “You don’t expect it here. We don’t have a lot of police activity, especially just on this road.”
Piccione said he might make some changes moving forward.
“There will definitely be cameras everywhere,” he said.
As a precaution, nearby schools were temporarily placed on lockdown.
An investigation into this incident is ongoing.
