INDIANAPOLIS – A man died in a shooting on the near east side, police
say.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers
responded to a report of a person down in the 2000 block of E. Brookside Avenue
around 8 a.m.

IMPD said officers found a man in a nearby alley suffering from what
appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, May 2, the Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 19-year-old Markes Day. His death was ruled a homicide by gunshot wound.

Investigators believe the shooting happened at a different location. It was
possible someone dumped the body overnight at the location, police said.

It was an uncommon sight for the normally quiet neighborhood.

“This is out of character here,” said resident, Kevin Moncrief. “It’s out of
hand. It’s gotten completely out of hand now and it’s crazy. It’s a weird
feeling and it’s close to home.”

People who live in the area told CBS4 the area has been an illegal dumping
ground for years of things like trash and even dead animals.

“They dump a lot of material there,” said resident, Clayton Hamilton. “From
concrete, to beds, to dressers in the alley and on that property that’s right
in front of it. I once found a dead animal in a tub there.”

They say they never imagined a person would be so heartlessly dumped in the
area too.

“That’s somebody’s loved one! Just to be laying there and just to dump a
body like that, that’s somebody’s loved one,” said Moncrief.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Investigators are following up on several leads.
