INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – An Indianapolis mother is grieving the death of her youngest child.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 2200 block of Barnor Drive on a report of a large disturbance Thursday night. There, 13-year-old Harry Taliefer was found shot and killed following a large fight.

Police say dozens of people, some kids and some adults, were fighting in the street when the teen was shot in the neck.

“The altercation started with children and adults got involved and that’s how my son lost his life,” said Harry’s mother, Shawnta Winston.

Surrounded by family members who couldn’t hold back their tears, Shawnta says her son died playing the role of peacemaker who was trying to get people to walk away from the fight.

“He was going to be somebody. My son had a bright future. He was a go getter,” said Winston.

“There was so much yelling and chaos, I don’t even know how to describe it,” said witness Lakreisha Heard.

Shell casings still litter the street in front of Lakreisha’s home, who witnessed the shooting and tried to save Harry’s life.

“I checked to see if he still had a pulse and he did so I gave him CPR,” said Heard.

Lakreisha also claims the 13-year-old was trying to encourage people to stop fighting when he was hit by gunfire.

“I’m still in disbelief. I’ve never seen anything like that, especially with a kid that was trying to avoid trouble,” said Heard.

Harry’s death marks the seventh homicide this year involving a victim 18 years or younger. It won’t comfort his family, but that number is significantly lower than last year, when the city finished with 22 such homicides.

Harry’s mother says all those children died too young.

“Not a day in my life did I think I’d be standing here talking about the death of my son,” said Winston.
