INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Investigators said a former maintenance man of an east side apartment complex used the access of his job to sexually assault women.

Three woman told investigators Joseph Sides, 44, used his keys to get into their apartments at the Colonial Park Apartments, unlocking the door and propositioning them for sex.

“Everybody was just like, wow,” said Rayshell Washington.

Washington said she couldn’t believe the charges her former neighbor and maintenance man is facing – residential entry, sexual battery, and battery on a person less than 14 years old.

“It was just a shock to me, seeing from the person I thought I knew to hearing all these different things. It just seems out of character for him,” she said.

According to court documents, Sides entered one woman’s apartment while she was asleep on the couch. He offered her money for sex, but she refused. He left and then came back, showing up with his pants down and offering more money. She said no, again.

The woman said she’d woken up once before to Sides in her bed, exposing himself, but she was scared by the ordeal and didn’t call police.

Another victim told investigators she woke up to Sides in her bed, rubbing her body, and exposing himself. She yelled at him and told him to leave. Sides tried to wake her sleeping child from the couch. The woman said she watched Sides go into the apartment across from her.

The third victim was wrapped in a towel, and according to investigators, saw Sides opening her locked door. That woman put her body in front of the door, and she told police Sides reached in and touched her breast before leaving.

Sides reportedly tried to ask a fourth woman for sex in a stairwell while exposing himself, but the woman refused. Court documents state he didn’t touch that woman.

Apartment management told IMPD that Sides had worked there for two years, and they’d never had any problems. They terminated him immediately and evicted him from the apartment.

The 44-year-old is still on the run.

“He had keys, and he could’ve come in our apartments at any time,” said Washington.
