UPDATE (11/15/23): Officials with IMPD provided an update on Wednesday, stating that Dontriell Hood was officially charged by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday with:

  • One count of criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony
  • Two counts of unlawful carrying a handgun, a Level 5 felony
  • One count of resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony.

UPDATE (11/13/23): IMPD provided an update Monday saying the department has uncovered home surveillance footage that shows the suspect who was shot, Dontriell Hood, grabbed the gun near him before officers fired.

“Detectives obtained additional video evidence from this incident, which has provided more clarity regarding what occurred,” IMPD said. “The information that was released last week still remains accurate.”

UPDATE (11/11/23): The suspect has been identified by IMPD as 31-year-old Dontriell Hood for his alleged role. As of now, Hood is still in the hospital.

INDIANAPOLIS — Officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department are on the scene of a reported officer-involved shooting Friday morning on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

Officials said the scene of the reported officer-involved shooting was near the 3900 block of Caroline Avenue, east of the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Officials said in a post on IMPD’s social media that no officers were injured. IMPD sources confirmed with FOX59/CBS4 that one person was shot by officers and the person is in “stable condition.”

Samone Burris, a public information officer with IMPD, said around 11 a.m., north district officers were dispatched on a report of a person armed and shots fired on Caroline Avenue.

Burris said that officers came into contact with an adult man, and at some point, a police action shooting occurred.

The man was transported to an area hospital and was reported to be in “serious but stable” condition, with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.

Burris said no officers were injured during the incident. She also stressed that no uninvolved citizens were injured. Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.

The scene remains active and there will be updates later in the day. Officials said the area near Millersville and Caroline Ave. is expected to be closed for several hours as this investigation continues. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area.

In a post from IMPD on social media, officials said that individuals in the area may notice a SWAT armored vehicle on the scene. IMPD said that they are there “for a safety sweep as a precaution.”

“There remains no active or ongoing threat,” the post read.

In a Friday afternoon update from IMPD Deputy Chief Michael Wolley, officers responded to the incident where they found an adult man who was displaying “erratic behavior” with a weapon. IMPD officers on scene gave verbal commands for the man to disarm, and officials said that the man initially complied, with his weapon on the ground beside him.

Wolley said that the man got up off the ground and began moving toward the area of the weapon. At that time, an officer fired his service weapon. The man was taken into custody and was transported to an area hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Officials stressed that the man remains in “serious but stable” condition.

Wolley said that the evidence on scene indicates that the man was firing a weapon outside while he was inside a home. Evidence also indicates that the man reportedly hit a car and a home. Police did not say if the man fired shots when officers were at the scene, but said that the man was outside the home when police arrived.

Officials said that the man, not identified by IMPD, has been preliminarily charged with:

  • Resisting law enforcement, Level 6 Felony
  • Unlawful possession of a weapon, Level 6 Felony
  • Criminal recklessness, Level 5 Felony

The officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is IMPD’s standard policy for all officers involved in shooting incidents.

IMPD reported that its officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras. IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.

A civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing related to the incident. The board review will occur after the criminal process has played out.

IMPD Internal Affairs will also conduct a separate administrative investigation of its own.
