INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating after two people were found shot on the city’s south side Tuesday afternoon in what appeared to be an attempted murder-suicide case.

IMPD said they were called to the Laurelwood public housing apartments off Salisbury Lane near Laurel Street and East Sumner Avenue just before 12:30 p.m. for a person shot. Officers found a man with gunshot wounds.

He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. IMPD said they also found an unresponsive woman at the complex with gunshot wounds.

She was pronounced dead on the scene. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified her as 29-year-old Nichole Lynn Kirksey.

IMPD Public Information Officer Samone Burris said detectives believe they’ve accounted for both people involved in the shooting but now need an answer why.

”Preliminary information leads us to believe that we are no longer looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. We believe that the detectives have identified all involved parties,” she said. ”This is an apartment complex. People are outside. You may have been in your home. You may have heard something.”

The Laurelwood killing is the fifth time since Monday morning homicide detectives have been called to solve the tragic mystery.

The complex is owned by the Indianapolis Housing Agency and provides public housing for low-income residents, though management of the property has passed on to a professional firm at the insistence of IHA’s private equity partner which found its investment was at risk due to substandard conditions and the site’s failure of federal housing inspections.

While relatives consoled each other over Kirksey’s death, an older woman was heard saying, “I now got five grandbabies to look after.”

”Emotions are high right now and that is expected,” said Burris. “This is a community that has been impacted by gun violence today and that is not normal. It is not normal to see someone be injured or someone be shot in your community and it is rightfully so that the community members are upset.”

IMPD announced shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday night that the surviving male, identified as 27-year-old Keyshawn Pettis, was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder. The incident is continuing to be investigated as a possible murder-attempted suicide.

Anyone with information on the shooting should contact the homicide office at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
