INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 22, 2015) – A group of local women formed a special bond over tragedy and the power of support. They call themselves “one shot survivors” because one shot changed their lives forever.
The women all have something in common, they lost a son or loved one to murder. Another woman’s child was shot and suffered debilitating injuries at the age of 13. Their stories are different but their pain is similar, they share emotions only a mother can feel.
The group One Shot Survivors holds regular meetings. Their next session is Thursday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. They will meet at Forest Manor Multi-Service Center located at 5603 East 38th Street.
“It’s one thing to talk to a grief counselor, it’s one thing to go to a therapist but it’s a whole other thing when you talk to someone who has walked in your shoes,” said Deandra Yates, whose son was severely injured in shooting.
Anyone is welcome to join One Shot Survivors. More information is available on the group’s Facebook page.
The group is also hosting a fundraising car wash this Sunday, April 26 from noon until 4 p.m. The women will be washing cars at the corner of 16th and Sharon. All proceeds will go towards buying a headstone for homicide victim Deshawn Ward.
