1 officer dead, 1 hurt in stabbing at Indiana State Prison

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Authorities confirmed the stabbing death of Lieutenant Eugene Lasco at the Indiana State Prison Sunday.

On Monday, Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Robert Carter ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at all IDOC facilities to honor Lasco.

“Lt. Eugene Lasco paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we are forever indebted to his service to the State of Indiana. Lt. Lasco was well-known amongst his colleagues as a true team member, someone they could count on, and he proved that again on Sunday, when he rushed in to help a fellow correctional officer. His sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Carter said.

Investigators said an inmate, identified as 38-year-old Tymetri Campbell, attacked and stabbed  Lieutenant Lasco and Sergeant Padrick Schmitt in a common area Sunday afternoon.

Authorities said around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, Sgt. Schmitt was stabbed multiple times by Campbell. Lt. Lasco went to help Sgt. Schmitt, and was also stabbed by Campbell. 

Both officers were transported to Franciscan Hospital where Lt. Lasco was pronounced dead. Officials said Sgt. Schmitt was transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, and is in stable condition.

Campbell now faces several preliminary charges including murder as a result of the investigation, according to IDOC.

He is serving 130 years for a 2004 triple murder in Indianapolis.

IDOC said Governor Eric J. Holcomb will direct flags to be flown at half-staff in LaPorte County on the day of Lt. Lasco’s services.

Lt. Lasco, 57, began his career with the Indiana State Prison on October 19, 2009.  During his career, Lt. Lasco was a locksmith and was a former member of the emergency squad. He served on the Technical Response Team for Safety Hazmat. Lt. Lasco received multiple accolades for his service to DOC. Lt. Lasco resided in LaPorte County.
