INDIANAPOLIS — An overnight shooting outside a business on the near northwest side of Indianapolis left one man dead and another in critical condition.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, just after 2 a.m., a panic alarm was received from the Kessler Food Mart in the 2900 block of W. Kessler Boulevard North Drive.

IMPD said as officers were en route, they received a second panic alarm from the food mart. The officers arriving on scene learned that the alarms weren’t for a robbery of the business or anything of that nature.

The store’s manager told CBS4 his employee said that he heard the door open and saw a man collapse into the entryway, bleeding, so he hit the panic button to immediately alert authorities.

Police also said when they arrived, they quickly discovered a man who was pronounced dead in the passenger seat of a car parked outside. The man had been shot, and the car had been struck by bullets as well.

“There was a second subject that was in the driver’s side of the vehicle. He had run inside to request help from the tenant at the Food Mart, and that’s why he hit the panic button. Instead of calling, he hit the panic button,” said Buckner.

The manager said he believes it was the actions of his clerk that gave the victim a fighting chance.

“He was also shot, and he was later transferred to Eskenazi in critical condition,” said Night Watch Captain Major Kerry Buckner. “He’s in bad condition, so if anybody can save him Eskenazi will.”

Police said it appears the victims were in the car when they were shot. Investigators are working to determine what led up to the shooting, but did not rule out the possibility of it stemming from meeting people to complete an online sale.

“A lot of people sell things online and they meet with the people in a public place,” Buckner began. “If people buy things online, OfferUp or Craigslist, IMPD offers a service where they can meet the person they’re buying or selling from at one of our roll calls and an officer will be present.”

Investigators said they did not believe this to be a random act.

Neighbors and employees of other businesses in the complex said they’re frustrated and saddened by the act of violence that claimed a life and left another person fighting for theirs.

“It’s just sad,” said Juanita Robey, assistant manager at B Clean Laundromat, next door to Kessler Food Market.

She said she found out about the shooting from investigators as she arrived at work Thursday morning.

“I’m like, I don’t know what happened, it was 2 o’clock this morning, but it’s real sad that this even happened,” Robey added.

Michael Cheatham, who comes to the area to shop, said he was upset to hear of the shooting.

“It’s terrible,” said Cheatham. “It’s sad for the community. It’s sad even for the human race.”

He hopes the community comes together to talk about ways to unify and find solutions to the violence.
