INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – An Indianapolis woman, who recently lost her husband to cancer, won $77,777 on a Hoosier Lottery scratch-off.

Playing scratch-offs is an occasional family bonding activity for Tonda Rhodes. She was at the Speedway at 3437 Lafayette Road with her son when they decided to buy a couple $5 Gold 7s scratch-offs. They scratched the tickets before they left the retailer and realized right away they had a winner.

Tonda claimed her prize at Hoosier Lottery headquarters with her daughter and daughter-in-law.

Tonda’s husband, Walter, died on Sept. 11, surrounded by his family. Those family members are the focus of Tonda’s plans for her big prize. She said the money gives them “more choices.”

Tonda is the fourth top prize winner for the $5 Gold 7s Scratch-off, which hit retailers in early August. Two top prizes remained for the game as of Dec. 19.

Estimated Overall Odds for Gold 7s are 1 in 3.81.
