INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– An Indianapolis artist’s Halloween costume is terrifying people across the world.

Carl Leck of CBL Imagery graduated from Ball State University and has painted many murals at schools on Indy’s south side, but it’s his costume based on the monster from Netflix’s “Stranger Things” that launched him to viral status.

He described the mechanics of the costume as “ridiculously simple.” There is a bicycle hand break for each of the head’s “petals.” They meet at a central point and connect to a longer cable that runs down his arm so he can flick his wrist to work the mask.

The finished helmet looks like he wouldn’t be able to see out of it. You certainly cant see his face through it.

He says he found a stretchy black dress at a thrift store for a few dollars, cut a small piece of it out and stretched it over the mouth hole.

“I could see through it fine,” Leck said. “Even through the gaps of the petals, I could navigate pretty well.”

He estimated about 35 hours were spent making it.

A gif of him operating the costume was posted to Reddit, where it immediately took off and gained thousands of upvotes. On Instagram, the video has racked up about 27,000 views. He said that was the first time he had the whole costume together.

Leck wore the costume to the Irvington Halloween Festival.

“It was a blast,” Leck said. “Irvington does it up right. It was a ton of a fun.”

He said many people unfamiliar with the show were pretty freaked out by it.

“I made a lot of little kids cry,” he said. “I got to see some genuine reactions of fear from strangers– adults too.”

The costume is now at his home and the head is at his studio in the Harrison Center. He has a bunch of cool photos of his work, including the now-famous costume, on his Instagram page.

He said we’ll have to wait and see what he comes up with next year.
