HENRY COUNTY, Ind. (Nov. 11th 2015) – Tragedy strikes an Indiana middle school after a teen takes his own life.

Law enforcement in Henry County confirms a student hanged himself inside Shenandoah Middle School.

The victim who killed himself inside the school is said to be a 17-year-old male.

Unfortunately, Indiana is one of the worst states in the country when it comes to teens taking their own lives.

“Indiana does rank high in teens thinking about suicide or attempting suicide, which is scary,” said Lisa Brattain.

Brattain works for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

That’s a job she started after her own son took his life.

She says suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in our state and is especially common among teens.

“The numbers are definitely frightening,” said Brattain. “We lose four times as many Hoosiers to suicide as do to homicide and that’s frightening.”

At Shenandoah, the school district’s website included a brief statement that read, due to a situation at the school classes were dismissed early.

The superintendent says the district will have counselors available to help other students cope with the death.

“We just have all respect for the child and family and other students and we want to do what is best for them,” said district superintendent Ronald Green.

Brattain says it’s important for friends and family to look for warning signs of depression and speak up if they see a loved one in need.

In 2013, more than 900 Hoosiers committed suicide.

That could help cut down on the states shocking teen suicide numbers.

“It is a big problem in this state because we don’t understand the resources that are available to us,” said Brattain.
