INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating after a boy was killed in a shooting on Indy’s northeast side Wednesday night.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 8:34 p.m. Wednesday to the 3500 block of Blue Spruce Lane after receiving reports that a person may have been shot. That is the listed address for the Villages at Mill Crossing apartment complex.

Upon arrival, IMPD said officers found a child suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was initially reported to be in critical condition as of 8:51 p.m., according to IMPD.

IMPD confirmed shortly after 10 p.m. that the child died after arriving at Riley Hospital for Children. The teen was later identified as 13-year-old Dayon Darnell Lyles.

“I have a message for those who are involved in this particular incident. You took it upon yourself to pick up a firearm for whatever reason and someone lost their life. I am eagerly asking you to turn yourself in,” said IMPD Public Information Officer William Young. “You heard behind me just a few moments ago that this family is hurting, there’s a mother out here who just lost a child. That has to wake our community up and our community shouldn’t be… We shouldn’t be used to this type of thing that is happening or occurring in our neighborhoods.”

IMPD said preliminary information indicates the shooting may have stemmed from a disturbance between two groups in the area. The boy was not believed to have been a target in the shooting, according to IMPD.

Police do not have any suspect information at this time. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call IMPD’s homicide office at 317-327-3475.

This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
