PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. — Police say there have been three separate accidents on I-70 westbound Saturday, claiming the lives of two people altogether.

An accident on I-70 involving two commercial vehicles and five passenger vehicles took the first person’s life, according to Indiana State Police.

The accident occurred Saturday morning on westbound I-70, near the State Road 46 exit, just 11 miles from the Illinois/Indiana state line.

The investigation is ongoing, and the name of the deceased has not yet been released.

Hours later, ISP stated another person lost their life in a serious accident that occurred at the 17 mile marker on westbound I-70. Again, an investigation is ongoing, and the name of the deceased has not yet been released.

The third accident happened at mile marker 48.6. There have not been any deaths reported in this crash. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department is handling this accident because ISP is tied up at the other two crash sites.

I-70 westbound will be closed for some time. While officials couldn’t give an exact time frame, they said it would most likely take several hours to clear the wreckage.
