Update: The charges in this case were dropped, however, in 2018, Patel was arrested for promoting prostitution, once again.
FRANKLIN, Ind. (Oct. 13, 2015) -- A substitute teacher is accused of paying for sex with a student outside of school.
Franklin Police arrested Mihirbhai Patel, 24, last week and prosecutors charged him with a misdemeanor count of patronizing a prostitute. The charge comes because the student is not a minor.
In court paperwork, officers said it was students at Franklin Central High School that brought the incident to administrators.
The student believed to be involved with Patel talked with officers, telling them that the two met on the app Grindr over the summer and agreed to meet at a Whiteland motel.
"(The student) voluntarily drove himself to the motel to meet (Patel) and figured they would probably have sex," the officer said.
The student also told officers that Patel discussed paying him for sex over the app.
"He knew he would be paid for sex because they discussed it prior to the meeting. ... (Patel) would send numbers (in) dollar amounts over Grindr after asking him to meet," the officer said.
Parents in Franklin said they were shocked the allegations and had a difficult time talking to their kids about them.
"All parents should be aware of somebody that's doing something like that," one parent said.
A Franklin Community Schools spokesperson sent CBS4 the following statement, saying Patel no longer worked for the district:
"Once a student at FCHS made school officials aware of the alleged incident, the Franklin Police Department was contacted. Student safety is our number one priority. Prior to employment at FCS an expanded criminal history check was completed on Patel. His substitute teacher account was suspended the day the claim was reported."
Patel bonded out of jail Tuesday. He faces one misdemeanor charge of patronizing a prostitute.
