KOKOMO, Ind. – The Kokomo Police Department says a man wanted on a warrant out of Tippecanoe County took his own life during a traffic stop Friday afternoon.
Officers initially responded to the scene near Markland Mall at about 2:27 p.m. to look into a report of two occupants possibly passed out inside a vehicle.
When an officer arrived, police say he observed the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on Savoy and into the mall parking lot. A traffic stop was then initiated.
Police say the vehicle came to a stop and as the officer approached, he observed a man in the driver’s seat and a woman in the passenger seat.
The officer asked the driver and female passenger for their identifications, which they did. Police say the officers then returned back to his vehicle to run their information. That’s when it was discovered the driver had an active warrant for probation violation.
Police say the officer exited his vehicle, walked to the driver’s side door and asked the driver to exit the vehicle. The driver then allegedly produced a handgun and threatened to shoot himself, which police say he did, inside the car.
The woman was safely removed from the vehicle, as medics were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries reported.
