Elderly couple dies after vehicle collides with Lawrence police officer’s vehicle

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Police say an elderly couple died after an officer-involved crash in Lawrence Monday afternoon.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Pendleton Pike and North Mitthoefer Road.

The passenger in the car, Selma Elling, 86, died shortly after the crash. Her husband who was driving the car, Norman Elling, 87, was transported to Methodist Hospital in serious condition. He died Monday night.

Lawrence police said an officer suffered a minor laceration. A K-9 officer in the police officer’s vehicle was not injured.

Lawrence police have enlisted the help of Indianapolis police to assist as they continue their investigation.
