INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indiana State Police say one person was killed after being struck by a vehicle on I-465 in Indianapolis.
Shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, ISP says a trooper was called to investigate a single-vehicle crash, with no reported injuries, on the ramp from I-465 eastbound to Harding Street. When the trooper arrived, the passenger in the vehicle told the trooper that the driver had left on foot to go find help.
Just after 5 a.m., the trooper was wrapping up the investigation and the vehicle was being towed. Police say the trooper offered the passenger a ride, but the passenger declined and instead chose to walk on the ramp toward a restaurant on Harding Street, where they would wait to be picked up by someone else.
As the passenger was crossing the ramp, he was struck by a vehicle believed to be traveling at a high rate of speed, according to officials. The vehicle left the scene. The trooper immediately began treating the victim until medics arrived. Despite efforts to save the victim’s life, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Indiana State Police identified the man as 21-year-old Jaciel Quiala.
Police said the vehicle was dark blue or black. They initially described it as a Kia Soul but later said no specific make or model had been determined. Anyone who sees a black or dark blue SUV or car with damage to the front passenger side should contact Indiana State Police at 317-899-8577.
